Anyone planning.....

Post by Froggy » Tue Jun 27, 2006 3:24 pm

a road trip from Europe to UK anytime soon?

I know its a reach but thought it was worth a shot. I had a ride arranged to get me and my dog over to UK on July 13th but the person driving had to cancel the trip....family stuff, so then today I spend at least 5 hours phoning air lines about getting my dog there....what a nightmare, its supposed to be easy now that they have the pet passport scheme....NOT !!!!
I get told that only British Airways will take dogs in cargo now from here to UK....so I phone them, they tell me that she (my dog) would have to fly from Frankfurt.....miles away, like 4 hours drive....BUT then they tell me that they have a dispute going on with DEFRA in UK about the microchips....British Airways doesnt have a microchip scanner WHAT!!!! I KNOW how much those things cost and its not that much, you can get generic/universal ones in US for around $70
SO.....BA...being the helpful people that they are (and I have to admit the woman I spoke to was very nice) they gave me the number for the Pet Travel Scheme people.....these are the people employed (I think) by DEFRA to handle pets travelling, well not trying to be politically incorrect here but the guy I talked to sounded like he was in India or somewhere...another UK company whos customer service is based a million miles away....like the train customer service in Birmingham....whats up with that????.....he told me that it would cost me almost €1,000 to fly my dog over WHAT !!!!! a few months ago I checked on the price to fly her back to California, it was €400 and that included €80 for a crate.....now my friend recently checked on having his dogs sent to UK from California, $400 max.....so lets think about this, to fly my dog from Hanover Germany to London Heathrow is almost €1,000.....Idve saved €200 if I send her to California and then have her flown to UK....how totally stupid is that !!!! So then I check on the train....Eurorail and Eurostar, one doesnt take passengers without a car or other vehicle but they will take pets, the other will take passengers but the only pets they allow is guide dogs
Im currently looking into the ferry service   and getting very frustrated.
I did eventually call BMI, they will take my dog from Hanover to Heathrow for just under €500, that guy was really cool, Australian too, kinda glad Im not an Italian right now!!!

Anyways, if anyone has any trips planned to drive over there or knows of anyone that will be in the near future (like about 2 weeks from now) Ill split the fees (as long as theyre not driving a big bus through there) no but seriously, I can come up with about €200 now but can arrange for anything additional. I start the new job on 17th but I can be there from 13th.

Like I said, it was worth a try.

Wow, Jackie...that is one hell of a runaround you have been through.

But one more thing- you touched on some issues which have become very disturbing to me in recent years and causing me grief to an extent which makes me too disturbed to even want to continue on with this life.

First of all...RFID chips...SPY CHIPS!!! (Radio Frequency Identification chips) The mark of the BEAST...the Anti Christ!!! End times prophecy. These are the very chips which will likely be implanted under our skin in either our hands or our forehead...very soon...as it is already happening in some places like Spain, Africa and the military.

Secondly, outsourcing jobs to India and other low-wage parts of the globe. GLOBALIZATION...again End times prophecy. This is bad. Really bad.

Have a great time, whereabouts will you be visiting??

Al, I know how you feel, this whole thing with microchipping people is going too far, I can see some of the points but it doesnt make it worthwhile nor aceptable, talk about Big Brother watching your every move. It really annoyed me when I heard about groceries having this RFID.....do 'they' really need to know specifically who buys what food or what make of laptop. I was in Kragans one time (CA auto parts place) the woman at the cash register wanted my address and phone number.....I was buying a bulb for my headlight !!! and paying cash for it, I asked her if she wanted my DL and SS numbers as well......she said no, the sarcasm went right over her head, I refused to give my info to her and she whined that she had to have it as the computer wouldnt open the cash drawer unless she put the info in....I told her Id make it easy for her and go and across the street to Auto Zone to buy a bulb !!!! which I did.

As far as dogs though, I really dont mind the chips at all, you do have a better chance of getting your dog back if they take off or if someone steals them or if theyre injured and picked up by animal control, at least theres some hope of someone contacting you rather than euthanizing them.....but....dogs dont have a way to communicate their name and address, people do.....did cross my mind once to have kids fitted with lo-jack so that wierdos will quit kidnapping them.

And as for outsourcing jobs....Im all for helping out underdeveloped countries but this is not really helping them out, its not even about them, theyre still working for a pittance, they still in some countries are using kids as young as 6 and 7 years old in sweat factories.....and seriously how WOULD someone in Delhi have any clue about a delayed train in Birmingham thats been caused by a car stalling on the track.....I dont see a good side to any of this, I keep trying to find one but I come up with nothing except for the greedy companies themselves getting richer by exploitation.

Update.

Borrowed the flippin money and Im flying from Hanover to Heathrow on 25th of this month (€700 for my dog and me....and she is not allowed to take a bag and has to sit in cargo :( ), I think I almost lost the job but its working out ok....well almost.
Last December when I was in Tenerife I was playing football with one of my nephews, I fell (actually he ran into me, I lost my balance and kinda threw myself away from him so I didnt land on him) I hurt my arm, thought Id pulled a muscle.....that was 7 months ago though and a couple of weeks ago it suddenly got a lot worse....so, as I have no health insurance I cant go to the doctors so I phoned my vet in CA (hes actually a good friend, is an orthopedic specialist...board certified and works on primates at LA zoo), he thinks Ive got a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder  luckily its my left arm so I should be alright doing the training....if not then I have no idea whats going to happen, Ill be in UK with nowhere to live and no job. :?

Bad timing or what !!!!

Hi Froggy,

Sorry to hear you're in dire straits (pun intended), I sure hope everything pans out well for you.

Just raise your head and tell yourself that you deserve better, and then work at it. Oh, and always carry some music with you.

If it helps, I think you can safely assume that you're in our thoughts here - mine for certain.

Thanks,

Im in a more positive mood today, I think the stress of it all has got to me a bit. Im really looking forward to starting the new job and 'having a life' again.
What this means is that I can get over to US in February to visit my daughter....shes pregnant and the baby is due Feb 14th :D
It means I can probably get a car again....if not then at least Ill be able to afford to rent one when I need one, it means I can go for a Starbucks when I want, buy clothes when I want....and all because Ill be doing the one job I love more than anything....working with dogs. How cool is that. :D

Hiya,
Im Back.....but just a quick one, I dont have a comp yet but I can use the one at work for now.....just been so busy I hardly get time to get on it.

The trip was fine except my dog was held over by DEFRA cos the German vet gave the wrong dewormer....she was well freaked out by the time I got her....I had to pay £187 for it, I didnt have it so they threatened to either send her back to Germany on the next flight out AND BILL ME FOR IT!!! or euthanize her.....luckily my friend from LA who is still in Brum paid it with his CC. The job is going okay....Im just exhausted

Off to birmingham on 15th of the month, I live on site so its hard to actually take a day off.....seem to find myself either talking to clients or doing a bit of extra training  so I figure 2 days off the site will do me some good.

Ill get back in here as much a poss....itll all settle down soon....I hope. Im going back to Germany on December 7th for 2 days to see this band called Boss Hoss, then Scotland on December 22nd for a wedding then California in Feb.....Im going to be a granny

See you all soon.
