I was asked....or I offered...cant quite remember how it happened, to set up a MySpace page for a Birmingham band. Now Im really kinda new to this MySpace stuff but I thought Id give it a go, hit all kinds of problems but I managed to get through most of them apart from trying to figure out how to get videos from a DVD on the page.

Anyways, the music is psychedelic, old style garage with a bit of punk thrown in on some tracks and the occasional ballad, great bunch of guys and there is a direct link through one of them to 'a' City Boy.....but I cant say who or what the link is....I know....Im mean. (the clues are in a post in the forum but I cant remember where :D )

I can say that one of the other band members 'George' was in another band in the 70's and had met CB a number of times, they played regularly at some of the local clubs in Birmingham including Barbarellas around the same time.

The band is called Heronimus Fin, theyre the kind of band that has refused to give in to commercialization of their music (meaning they wont allow others to hack it up, change the lyrics, change the tempo to create something that doesnt sound even remotely like the original) which had they gone along just for the ride would no doubt by now have made them a household name. (I actually played a lot of their music when I lived in CA for friends and work colleagues to hear as they havent released anything...yet...in US, there was A LOT of interest in them.) They have a solid loyal and growing following around UK and in some European countries where theyve played.

Anyways....just thought Id launch this page in here among 'friends' so please check the page out....keep in mind Im still working on it (and if anyone can help me get some videos on there in the most un-technical way possible Id appreciate it  )

Thanks guys.

Nice page - better said, it's as nice as a myspace page can be. What do you want to know about video uploads?

Hi Rito, thanks. Yes there are limits to what you can do....Ill be attempting a website next

Ive been reasearching DVD conversion things

The videos, they dont have anything already on line, I have theire new DVD and there are videos on there of some of the songs theyve done, I had someone convert another video(DVD) of one of their songs but every time I upload it it stops at 73% so Im pretty sure its a glich on the DVD during the conversion....or something, I dont think the problem is with the myspace site (I have been on to them for advice, they cant think of anything other than the problem is at this end not theirs).

So what I need to know really is can you download a dvd converter from the internet for free (Im broke) and is it something that is fairly straight forward.....like you put the dvd into the computer, press a button and it changes it to an mpeg format? I think this is in avi. or something and myspace doesnt accept that format.

Ive seen some of my friends videos that theyve got on there themselves and I know that they are about as technically challenged as I am but theyve all done it from home movie vcr footage, no one has done one from a dvd.

Hope all that made sense

Thanks.

Hey Froggy
Although I know Thomas has far more technical skills in this area, the one thing I do know is there are loads and loads of free/shareware DVD utilities on the net that will solve your problem.

In basic terms I believe you'll need something that converts DVD video to Mpeg, AVI, Real Media or Quick Time format. I'm not sure which one you need but ALL are available.

Let me know it you need me to point out where to download these utilities.

Jackie,

I am entirely unfamiliar with MySpace but I like what you have done with your page:-) It is interesting to view and seems informative.

I wish you the best of luck with it:-))

Thanks al, technically its Fins page, George and Mr P are going in there and answering emails etc, Im just going to keep it up for them and 'try' and do a little PR for them.

I have a page as well though www.myspace.com/23jake5

to be honest when I first heard about it I thought it was just bands and teens that were using it but then I got talking to some people i know in CA and quite a few of my friends are using it, I think its a lot better than the old IM messaging thing, it gives me something to do and its a stepping stone (meaning Im learning a lot about setting stuff like this up) to doing my own website, I want something with all the dog and pet info on there plus some other stuff, mainly because I go into about 4 or 5 pet forums now just answering basic health questions, nothing to take the place of a vet, just real basic stuff....like "you need to go to a vet NOW" kind of thing :) and theres a lot of training info that Im giving away....I already moderate/admin 3 of them and have been asked to moderate a 4th, its a lot of work, might as well set something up and see if I can do some kind of sales thing on it and make some money from it as well or at least build up a reputation for on line advice in my own name (I use different screen names in all the forums), sounds a bit naff but I enjoy it....so many forums are a bit too much and if I stay off them for too long I get emails asking where I am so I think it would be easier if I can just send a link to them instead then they can go straight to the site, I might even set something up where I can do on line/phone conferences for a charge....not really sure how it will go but like I said I enjoy this stuff anyways.

The page looks great:-)

I like the frog theme, too, which reminds me; why Froggy? I always wondered what the significance was to that user name and now the frog theme.

It is cool that you are able to give advice regarding the health and well-being of animals and I really don't see any reason why you could not or even should not earn some money doing it.

I hope in time to do something like that whereby I can earn some cash with my own venture. I was writing for another's site and made a few bucks, however it is very unreliable.

I know a couple of people that are making money from websites but dont know of anyone who is making a decent living off it, its okay as a sideline though for a bit of extra cash.

As for 'froggy'....Im about the oldest of all my cousins so I used to babysit a lot and something came up one time while I was babysitting 2 cousins Sarah and Becky, some game they were playing or somthing where everyone really had different names....so I said my real name was Kermit and that the frog stole my name....from then on, every Christmas, birthday etc they always bought me 'frog stuff' and as they had told everyone else in the family....dozens of them I had tons of frog stuff.....someone saw a frog t-shirt or ornament....they thought of me.....so fast forward to when I bought my last car, I had a choice of plum purple or frog green....and then I named my car Kermitina, had a little Kermitina ballet dancer hanging up on the rear view mirror....and people called my car the 'frog mobile'.....so when I first discovered forums (just over a year ago) I wasnt feeling too creative with usernames and 'froggy' was the first name that popped into my head, so Im froggy in 3 forums and frogster in one. The reason I went with the frog theme is it was a bunch of people from one particular forum that got me into the whole myspace thing, I know quite a few of them as theyre in the High Desert area where I used to live....so I just went with it.

and thats the story of the frog

Nice MySpace site! :D

http://www.videohelp.com is a good source for info. I forget how to do things with video from one time to the next and then I always come back to Videohelp. They have good conversion guides and tips about freeware/shareware/trialware to use.

Many times you'll need to use 2 different free softwares to achieve what you want. Like one for ripping from DVD and one to convert/compress from the resulting format to the one you want. That's the price for using free software; they are often specialised in one area.

Here's a direct link to softwares for converting AVI to MPEG:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools.php?conv ... h2=Search+

Sourceforge.net is another place where there are loads of free stuff for video and all other kinds of software.
http://sourceforge.net/softwaremap/trov ... rm_cat=125

Be careful and search the net and read about the tools you chose before using any of them. Some may be buggy and/or infected with malicious code...

Good luck! :D

This soapbox thing beats any on-line encyclopedia if you ask me. 8) :!:

I mean, really, between the three dozens or so of us regular posters here I'm sure we know everything worth knowing about anything that matters to any of us...

It's great fun to do this video editing thing! The problem is that it's a jungle to explore and understand all the technicalities. I don't own a DV-cam myself so for me it always passes too long time between using the software.

Lately, I have tried NeroVision Express for making my own DVDs from .AVI clips. I don't know if it's a "good" software or not but it was already installed on my harddisc.

I filmed my daughter's band a week ago and discovered that the sound recorded from the borrowed DV-cam was too strong in the mid frequencies, probably adapted to voice recording. It sounded B.A.D! So somehow, I had to rip the sound file from the .AVI file, treat it in a sound editing software (loudness, normalising output levels... etc  ) and put it back together with the video on to the DVD. Videohelp was invaluable help to me. I just had to look for .AVI to .WAV conversion, download a (free) software called VirtualDub and rip the sound from the .AVI.

Having done that, it was easy to create the DVD with NeroVision and replacing the original sound file, adding video effects, creating chapters (songs), menus, submenus and I could even create a little slideshow with the pics taken with a digital camera at the occasion as "bonus material". Then just let the software go about and create the DVD (that's a looong process...) and burn it on to a DVD-R! All I have left now is to create the cover for the DVD and hand it out to relatives who want it!
