Rush, would be up there alright :D

What are your criteria for defining "best band"? Musicality? Most impact on you personally? Longevity?

Steely Dan would make my list, as would Kansas, Thin Lizzy, Boomtown Rats, Yes, Dream Theater, Genesis, Pink Floyd etc etc etc - any help with criteria to narrow this down :?

Andy, you have a point regarding criteria. However, if no criteria were considered, I would go with ELO. One guy with so much talent.

Hey Andy!
I would define rock as having been made from 1967 to 1986 by a band having more than one guitar player but not more than four, and having released a minimum of three albums without more than two ballads. :))

But seriously, if I had answered this question in the years from 1990 to 2010, my answer would be far different than it is today. In my present state of mind I have to resort to what I thought were my favorite bands in the late '70s. Therefore I say;
ELO
Styx
Kansas
Eagles
Foreigner
